In this part i want to share my experience to install Mikrotik OS on USB
This all begin when i build mini x86 PC for traffic management in my Coffee wireless Hot Spot in my town Banyuwangi. I decided to use Mikrotik Router OS for the system because it simple but have lot of feature for wireless traffic management.
But i wonder, can i not use hard drive? to minimize the space of my mini computer?
Preparation:
USB stick with 4 GB size (i got success in this size)
virtual box
Mikrotik OS cd image file (.iso)
Step 1:
open virtual box and create new virtual machine
Step 2:
configure the ram (i set 256 MB for this part)
Step 3:
set to do not add virtual hard drive, we don't need one because we are going to use USB Stick instead (if there are warning, just continue)
Step 4:
go to setting of our created virtual machine, in the storage we will see empty disk in controller IDE
set into our .iso file of Mikrotik OS
Step 5:
start our virtual machine with our USB stick connected,
after loading we will encounter "fatal error no hard drive fount", do not reboot
Step 6:
press CTRL, the right one in your keyboard, go to device > USB device > select your USB sticks
then reboot
Step 7:
after reboot the USB will detected as SATA, so we can continue to install system and packages
you can install all or just minimal package (my recommend is install all)
Step 8:
after the installation is finished, we can try it, but
we can not use the virtual box
the USB will boot able in real boot menu in your PC
have a nice Mikrotik OS in USB (^.^)
note: if you want to use web-proxy caching, the speed is depend on read and write speed on your USB sticks, so for this function i recommend USB 3.0 speed :)
